BUREAU OF LOST CULTURE: Glad to Be Gay: Part 1 (02/03/2024)
Tom Robinson is an English songwriter & broadcaster who rose to fame in the 70s as an LGBT and and anti-racist campaigner.
He has released over 20 albums and is an award-winning broadcaster who has made programs on all six BBC radio channels.
In the this, the first of two programs, we talk about his troubled youth and coming out, about the gay counterculture of London in the 70s, about his early activism and his journey to having a huge hit with the song 2-4-6-8 Motorway – and later how he leveraged, and possibly risked, his success in releasing Glad To Be Gay, a song that had no precedent – and despite being deliberately ignored by the BBC, became – and remains – a huge protest anthem.
