Paul Sandell is back with a brand new show SCENE/SOUNDS – following on from his show The Music Library SCENE/SOUNDS continues his focus on the music of the big and small screens – from scores to sound design, from Library music to Foley artists, from theme tunes to library music.
Academy Award winning composer Rachel Portman guests on this month’s show to talk all through her career – from creating a film with other students (including Hugh Grant, Imogen Stubbs, Mark Williams and more) in Oxford to writing scores to countless films.
We discuss filmmaker Alan Parker took notice of her composing talents and how working on Jim Henson’s The Storyteller and the influentual Television drama Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit opened the door to Hollywood.
Rachel has worked on many films that are literary adaptations (Emma, The Sider House Rules, Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit) and we talk about how the books can help or hinder the composition process.
