MOVING SOUNDS with James Heather – Vashti Bunyan (Interview & Selections) (11/12/2024)
On this month’s edition of Moving Sounds, James Heather interviews the songwriter Vashti Bunyan.
Vashti, a true bonafide legend, talks about the music that has most moved her in her life, with a slant towards the ambient and modern classical. Vashti’s story of setting off in a horse & cart to an artist commune in the remote Scottish Islands and also releasing “Just Another Diamond Day” in 1970 to little fanfare at the time only for it to find a big audience later is well told. Of course this is all covered in the interview, but also some less told stories. Vashti talks about going to “spectral” Nick Drakes’ house to write music, her song writing process and breaking the needles on her Dads record player by playing Beethoven on repeat. We also hear music by artists who form part of her wider band, how she is not a folder singer and also her many links to the composer Max Richter.
